Metal Tech

Metal Tech

In Metal tech we were suppose to make a balancing toy.
I did not finish because I didn't turn up to most of my classes. I didn't want to make the toy because I thought it was boring and it was hard.
I did enjoy welding and putting on the overalls and welding my pins into the base of the toy. So I learnt how to to weld and use some of the machinery like the drilling of the holes and cutting machine because we used it to cut out the arrow part out, I also learnt how to sand because there was a lot of sanding to do and I didn't enjoy sanding.
I did found it a bit challenging because I didn't finish it.
I did get better at sanding things smooth. So overall I did enjoy and could of spent my time better and I would of finished the toy.

A way of getting a ta moko was by using bamboo sticks, and thin string made from Harakeke flax. This is then dipped into ink which is transferred to skin.

Today we had to do a sign about safety in the
work shop. I choose to do the lathe because its a big
machine and there was no safety sign on it. You
need to wear eye protection to stop the metal scraps
flying or going in to your eyes.

I wonder today about the whale shark...

Whale sharks are the largest shark today. They have
in common with whales because they are huge as a whales and feed like a whale.
They are known to be carpet filter feeding sharks.
So they sift tiny plankton and fish eggs, shrimp, algae, sardines, anchovies, mackerels and tuna  from the sea.
They dont tear apart there prey like other sharks do. They need to filter lots of water to get the nutrients needed to power their huge bodies.
There mouth is 1.50m wide. Their head is flat with two small eyes at  the sides.
Did you know that they have 300 to 350 rows of very tiny teeth.
Whale sharks can grow up to 12m long but they can get to 18m .
They weigh 18.70 tons so thats about the sizeof a school bus.
Whale sharks tend to like warmer areas and are found in tropical waters.
They are slow at moving. Whale sharks stay underneath water for more than 2hrs on deep dives but then they rest near the surface for long periods after that.
